## Is regrouting enough when grout starts crumbling?

Regrouting may be appropriate when the tiles and the surface beneath them are sound. Loose tiles, recurring cracks, soft surfaces or moisture can change that assessment. Share the wider area as well as the joints so the provider can consider the cause before recommending a cosmetic repair.

Old grout can be removed and replaced without taking out the tile. But if tiles are loose, sound hollow when tapped, or are cracking along with the grout, regrouting may only cover up a problem underneath.

In a shower, there's another consideration: grout is not the waterproofing system. Crumbling grout doesn't automatically mean there's a leak, but soft walls, persistent moisture, or loose tile deserve a closer look.

## What to look for

A straightforward grout repair usually looks like:

Grout that's powdery, cracked, or missing between otherwise solid tiles.

Discoloration or wear concentrated in the joints.

Tile that still feels firmly attached.

No softness or movement in the surrounding surface.

The job may be bigger if:

Tiles move when pressed.

Several tiles sound hollow.

Cracks run in a line across the floor.

A shower wall feels soft.

There's staining or damage on the other side of the wall.

## Why grout fails

Grout takes a lot of wear, especially on floors and in showers. Over time it can break down from traffic, water exposure, cleaning products, or simply age. Movement underneath the tile can also crack the grout — which is why grout that repeatedly fails in the same place is worth investigating rather than just covering again.

## Repair or retile?

If the tile is well bonded, the failed grout can usually be removed and replaced. A few damaged or loose tiles can often be replaced individually. If many tiles are loose or the surface underneath has failed, however, removing and rebuilding part of the tiled area may make more sense than repeatedly repairing the grout.

## Photos that help

A few clear photos can help start the conversation. Only photograph areas you can reach safely.
