# Plumbing help for leaks, toilets, fixtures, and water heaters

Running toilets, leaking fixtures and planned replacements. A5 reviews your request and helps connect you with an independent plumbing professional.

Plumbing · Northern New Jersey

[Request plumbing service](https://www.a5homeservices.com/request-service?service=plumbing) Or call (973) 437-5517

A5 makes the introduction. Discuss the estimate, scheduling and work directly with the independent professional.

Common requests

*   Toilets and fixtures
*   Leaks and supply lines
*   Faucets and sinks
*   Water heater requests

A clear place to start

## Tell us about your project.

Tell us where the problem is, when it started and whether water is currently leaking.

### What happens next?

A5 reviews the service and location, then offers the opportunity to a relevant professional. After acceptance, they can view your request and contact you. You agree scope, timing and an estimate directly.

A5 is not an emergency dispatch service. For an immediate hazard, contact the appropriate emergency service or utility.

Understand your options

## What plumbing details should I include in a service request?

Tell us which fixture or visible pipe is affected, what the water is doing and whether the problem is contained. Photos can help a plumber assess the next step. A5 offers introductions for planned work; an uncontrolled active leak needs an emergency plumbing service.

Get scheduled help for a running toilet, leaking faucet, fixture replacement or a contained visible pipe leak. Tell A5 what is affected, what you have noticed and whether nearby surfaces got wet. We review the request and check for a plumbing provider to discuss the repair. Uncontrolled leaks need emergency help rather than a scheduled request.

## What the provider will assess

If water is actively leaking, stop it if you can do so safely. Close the shutoff valve for that fixture, or the home's main water shutoff if the leak won't stop there.

If you can't stop the water and it's causing damage, call an emergency plumber. A5 is for scheduled plumbing projects, not emergency dispatch.

Once the water is under control, the question becomes much simpler: what failed, and does it need to be repaired or replaced?

## Common plumbing projects

Request an introduction through the A5 network for:

Faucets that drip or leak.

Toilets that run, refill on their own, or leak.

Visible leaks at pipes, valves, and supply lines.

Fixture replacements.

Aging or leaking water heaters.

Plumbing repairs connected to drywall, tile, or painting damage.

You don't need to know exactly what's wrong before submitting the project.

Tell us what the water is doing and where you see it.

## If there is an active leak

Use a known water shutoff only if you can reach and operate it safely. Keep away from water near electrical equipment. If the water cannot be controlled, contact an emergency plumber rather than waiting for an A5 response. Take photos only once it is safe to do so.

## Repair or replace?

Many plumbing problems are repairs, not replacements. A dripping faucet may need a cartridge, washer, or another internal part. A running toilet usually needs a flapper, fill valve, float adjustment, or another part inside the tank. A leaking supply line or shutoff valve can often be replaced without changing the fixture. Replacement becomes more likely when the fixture itself is cracked, badly corroded, unreliable after previous repairs, or simply something you already planned to change. Water heaters are similar: some failures can be repaired, while a leaking tank generally points toward replacement.

## Water damage often becomes a second project

A plumbing repair may stop the leak without finishing the job.

Water can leave behind:

Damaged drywall.

A stained ceiling.

Peeling paint.

Wet cabinets.

Damaged tile or flooring.

The order matters:

Fix the leak, then let the area dry, then repair the damaged surface, then paint or finish last.

A5 can help keep those related steps connected instead of treating them as unrelated projects.

## Plumbing work in New Jersey

Plumbing contracting is a licensed trade in New Jersey. Ask the proposed provider to confirm the credentials and scope required for your project. Depending on the project, permits or inspections may also apply. You don't need to determine that yourself before requesting help. The plumbing professional should confirm what the job requires.

## Water heaters

If your water heater is:

Leaking around the tank.

Producing rusty-looking hot water.

No longer keeping up with normal use.

Making unusual noises.

Or simply old enough that you're considering replacement,

include a photo of the unit and its manufacturer label.

That label can tell the plumber a lot before the visit.

If the tank is actively leaking and you can't contain the water, use an emergency plumbing service rather than waiting for A5.

## Photos that help

A few clear photos can help start the conversation. Only photograph areas you can reach safely.

* ### Show the whole area

    The affected fixture, valve or visible pipe.

*   ### Include the detail

    Where water appears and any visible corrosion, once it is safe to approach.

*   ### Add useful context

    The surrounding area that got wet; include the manufacturer label for a water-heater request. Do not dismantle plumbing for photos.

## What affects the size of the job

The biggest variables are usually:

Whether the problem is exposed or hidden inside a wall or ceiling.

Repair versus replacement.

Age and condition of nearby valves and piping.

The fixture or water heater being installed.

Whether access has to be opened.

Permits or inspections where required.

Drywall, tile, or painting work after a leak.
