## Can a hole be patched without replacing the whole wall?

Many localized holes can be repaired without replacing the entire wall. The size of the opening, condition of the surrounding board and anything exposed behind it affect the repair. Include the wall texture and paint in the conversation so the estimate covers the finished result.

Small holes can be filled. A doorknob-sized hole can be patched. Larger damaged areas can be cut back to solid drywall and replaced with a new piece.

You generally do not need to replace an entire wall because of a hole.

The part that separates a good repair from an obvious patch is the finishing: getting the surface flat, matching any texture, and painting it so the repair disappears.

## The size changes the repair

Nail and screw holes. Usually filled, sanded, primed, and touched up.

Small impact or doorknob holes. Typically need backing or a patch plus several thin coats of joint compound.

Larger holes. The damaged drywall is cut into a clean shape, backing or framing is added where needed, and a new piece of drywall is installed, taped, and finished.

Soft or water-damaged drywall. That's different. The damaged material may need to come out, but the water source needs to be fixed first.

## Will the patch show?

The drywall repair itself should be flat and hard to find once it's finished. Paint is often the bigger challenge. Even if you have the original paint color, older paint can fade or change slightly over time. On a very visible wall, painting from corner to corner can give a cleaner result than touching up only the patch.

## What if there are wires or pipes behind it?

Don't poke or cut farther into the wall. If the hole exposes plumbing, electrical wiring, or an opening made during another repair, mention that in the request. It can change how the repair should be approached.

## Photos that help

A few clear photos can help start the conversation. Only photograph areas you can reach safely.
