## Why does a repaired drywall crack keep returning?

A returning crack needs an assessment of the joint and the cause of movement, rather than another surface patch alone. Tell the provider when it appeared, whether it is changing and what previous repairs were made. Widening cracks or other new movement should be assessed before cosmetic work.

Many drywall cracks are cosmetic — especially along seams, above doors and windows, or where walls meet ceilings. A lasting repair often means opening the crack, repairing or replacing the tape, and refinishing the joint rather than just filling the visible line.

The important question is whether you're looking at a drywall problem or signs of larger movement.

## Usually a drywall repair

Common examples include:

A thin crack over the corner of a door or window.

A straight crack along a drywall seam.

A crack where the wall meets the ceiling.

Nail or screw pops.

A crack that reappeared through an old patch.

These can often be repaired by securing the drywall where needed, re-taping the joint, applying new compound, sanding, priming, and painting.

## When to look closer

Tell us if the crack: Is getting noticeably wider. Appeared suddenly. Runs through several different surfaces. Is accompanied by doors that recently started sticking. Appears with sloping floors or foundation cracking. That doesn't automatically mean there's a structural problem. It does mean fixing the drywall may not be the first question to answer.

## Why drywall cracks

Homes move slightly over time. Wood framing expands and contracts. Drywall joints take some of that movement. Fasteners can shift. Older tape can lose its bond. Previous repairs may have covered the crack without correcting the joint underneath. That's why the location and pattern of the crack matter more than simply whether a crack exists.

## Will the repair show?

A properly finished repair should blend into the surrounding wall once it's primed and painted. Texture and paint matching can make the finishing work more involved, particularly on ceilings or walls that haven't been painted in years.

## Photos that help

A few clear photos can help start the conversation. Only photograph areas you can reach safely.
