## What should I budget for painting?

HomeGuide lists $300–$1,000 for painting a room’s walls nationally. Room size, preparation and paint selection matter, and adding the ceiling, trim or doors changes the scope. These are planning references, not New Jersey averages or A5 quotes.

## Planning ranges and what they cover

Published planning references in US dollars. Your professional prices your actual job; these are not A5 offers.

*   National reference

    ### Room painting, walls only

    $300–$1,000 per room

    Room walls, with room size and condition varying. Ceiling and trim are excluded from this walls-only reference.

*   National reference

    ### Painting a 200-square-foot room, walls only

    $300–$700 per 200-square-foot room

    Per room, labor included, in Fixr’s room-size table. The size is floor area, not paintable wall area. Ceilings and trim are a different scope.

## How to use these figures

A “room” is not a standard unit. HomeGuide’s broad walls-only range and Fixr’s specific room-size example are planning references, not competing quotes for your home. Exterior work needs its own assessment.

## What changes your estimate

* Which surfaces are included: walls, ceilings, trim, doors or cabinets.
* Patching, sanding, stain blocking and changes from dark to light colors.
* Wall height, detailed trim, furniture protection and the chosen paint system.

## Compare the work, not just the total

*   ### Surface preparation

    Ask what repairs and preparation are included before the first coat. Photograph existing peeling or damaged areas.

*   ### Paint and finish

    Specify the product, finish, colors and surfaces. Confirm who buys paint and how additional coats are handled.

*   ### Room handback

    Confirm furniture moving, masking, cleanup and what touch-ups will be checked with you at completion.

## Get a more useful estimate

List each room with approximate floor dimensions and ceiling height. Identify trim and doors separately, and send close-ups of damage rather than only a room photo.

## Questions

**Does a room price include wall repairs and trim?**
Ask for those items to be listed. A walls-only repaint is a different job from repairing damaged surfaces and painting ceilings, doors and trim.

**How many coats of paint are included?**
Ask the painter to specify preparation, any primer and the planned finish coats for each surface. Discuss coverage when changing colors and agree how additional coats will be approved and priced before work begins.
